Meyer London
Russian-born Meyer London moved to NYC where
he became interested in politics and where he provided
legal services to the International Ladies Garment Workers
Union (ILGWU). He ran on the Socialist
ticket for a seat on the NYS Assembly, representing the
Lower East Side. He lost that election, but, years later,
ran three times for Congress, on the Socialist ticket,
finally winning in 1914. In Congress, he sponsored
bills - all of
which were defeated then, but, which were eventually
adopted through the efforts of others years
and decades later, including
minimum
wage, unemployment insurance and civil rights.
